Shadows of Brimstone

You may be surprised to see a boardgame walk away with today’s honours, but rarely does a crowdfunding project garner 3403% of its original target.

The reward-based Kickstarter project is very skilfully presented. The campaign video begins with an image-assisted narration which quickly immerses viewers in the story behind the game. The game blends the old West with apocalyptic demons – an unusual mixture which is drawing supporters by the thousand (3,633 backers currently).

“Shadows of Brimstone is a fast-paced, fully cooperative dungeon-crawl boardgame set in the old West, with a heavy dose of unspeakable horror,” said Game Designer Jason C. Hill. Players take on the role of a classic wild West archetype – the lawman, the gunslinger, the saloon girl, and so on. The game is driven by “tactical gameplay, lots of dice and a robust, card-driven exploration system”.

The team behind the project have done a masterful job of managing their rewards and stretch goals as the funds have poured in. A grand total of forty-four stretch goals – usually extra funding for the creation of additional characters – have been set and surpassed, en route to $1,020,842. The original target was $30,000. The reward system is equally in-depth, with a myriad of cards, characters and box sets available to backers at discounted rates.

Shadows of Brimstone should serve as a pointer for those wishing to create a successful Kickstarter campaign of their own. The campaign will run for just two more days, and can be viewed here:
