The feature enables the digital bank’s users to send payment requests to both Monzo and non-Monzo account holders.

Digital bank Monzo’s latest feature enables its customers to select a payment and split it with friends. Announcing the feature on its blog, the purpose of the update is to clarify why payments are sent and received. No longer will running to the toilets when the bill arrives get you out of paying.

It’s already easy for Monzo customers to send money to one another but those customers also wanted to be able to request money. Users can now view their statement, choose a payment and select the new “split bill” option. The bill can be divided equally or can be manually adjusted. The debtor receives a payment request and the payee receives a notification once paid.

Testing of the feature started back in August, where the main feedback was users wanting to split with non-Monzo users. Responding to the comments, Monzo account holders can send a request to anyone. Monzo generates and sends a link for the non-user to access and send money.

Since the release of the new feature, Monzo users have requested a few further tweaks. These include being able to cancel a request after sending and being able to merge a payment which was received before paying a bill, to condense the customer’s statements.
