Mastercard and Bunq to expand Green Card availability to 30 EU countries

Bunq, the Dutch app-only bank, has today announced it has extended its partnership with payment provider giant Mastercard to roll out its Green Card across Europe.

The European challenger bank’s launched its Bunq Green Card, a metal card that plants a tree for every €100 spent, back in 2019 and has since seen an increase in usage since its launch back in November 2019.

Less than a month ago, the bank announced it had helped customers plant over 70,000 trees in three months, and it had also doubled user deposits to over €433m in 2019.

The bank has now reached the milestone of 100,000 trees planted as a result of customer spending.

The metal card, which is also produced sustainably, has offset the equivalent to 32,560 flights from Paris to New York.

Ali Niknam, CEO and founder of Bunq, said: “We are extremely excited to take our partnership with Mastercard to the next level.”

Niknam, who founded TransIP, the third biggest domain name and web hosting provider in the world, added: “Together with our users, we have established an easy way for everyone to create a greener world with zero effort. Together we will further expand bunq Green Card throughout Europe.”

The expansion will make the environmentally friendly card available in 30 European countries where Bunq’s standard card is available, including the UK, Spain, Italy and France.

As of September 2019, Bunq launched in all EU countries and, despite launching in non-Euro currency countries, including the UK, it remains a Euro-only bank.
