Which are the best European fintechs to work for in 2021?

Great to see some familiar names on the list.

The European fintech landscape is thriving and, we’re happy to say, outperforming traditional finance when it comes to workplace happiness.

Progressive workplace cultures, office perks, increasingly the ability to work anywhere, and, of course, the promise of changing the financial world have attracted millions to join the fintech workforce.

But which European fintech is the best to work for?

To answer this question AltFi worked with the team at Glassdoor, the job-seeker site that encourages current and former employees rate their workplaces.

Glassdoor ranks employers on a 0-5 scale, from “Very Dissatisfied” to “Very Satisfied”, with individual employee ratings weighted depending on their recency and a number of other factors.

And the winner is...

Paris-based expense management platform Spendesk came top of Glassdoor’s European ranking, with an average rating of 4.9 across over 50 employee reviews.

Spendesk, led by co-founder and CEO Rodolphe Ardant, has doubled its headcount in the last year to 300 employees and just last month raised €100m from General Atlantic, Index Ventures and Eight Roads Ventures to continue its growth.

"Spendesk stands out for its strong culture, and employees love the transparent communication, constructive feedback, flat hierarchy and freedom to get things done,” Joe Wiggins, head of corporate communications at Glassdoor, who analysed the rating data, told AltFi

“The company rates highly for Culture & Values and Senior Management, with an impressive 100% CEO approval rating. Spendesk says that companies which trust and empower their people are able to move faster and do better work, and it looks like this philosophy is coming through in higher levels of employee satisfaction."

Spendesk offers its employees the choice to work fully remote from anywhere, or through a mix of remote and flexible office working.

Pierre Verstraeten, Spendesk's head of people, told AltFi that much of the company's success has been down to the values and beliefs of CEO Rodolphe Ardant.

"We believe that a company culture is the sum of all individual behaviors and the processes we establish for the team – so the values have to be part of every single one of these processes and the base for our behavior," he said.

"For instance, the cultural fit is a crucial part of our hiring process as we evaluate candidates based on our values. The best technical skills don't matter if we have doubts about the team fit."

Best of the rest

Spendesk wasn’t the only high-performing company, a host of familiar names secured strong positions on Glassdoor’s list.

Cross-border payments group TransferGo in London came 3rd on the list with a 4.8 average rating among current and former employees.

Wiggins from Glassdoor said: "TransferGo employees are described as friendly, supportive, smart and kind, with people living the company values.”

“Again, flexible working is often cited as a key pro, as with other highly rated employers in the ranking, with a culture that promotes ownership, trust and accountability. The company has clearly thought carefully about agile working, holiday policies and valuing staff."

Mollie,Chip and Checkout.com came 5th, 6th and 7th respectively on the ranking, with Thought Machine and Wise in 9th and 10th place.
