The CEOs of fintech firms have made regular appearances on the New Year’s honours lists of recent years and the latest, out on Friday, had two notable mentions.

Ezechi Britton, the co-founder and former CTO of financial wellbeing provider Neyber and former judge of the AltFi Awards 2019, received an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for services to Diversity and to Young People.

In recent years Britton has co-founded Code Untapped, a digital skills accelerator for people from underrepresented backgrounds, and is also a principal and founding member of Impact X Capital, a £100m VC fund dedicated to funding underrepresented entrepreneurs.

“I'm genuinely humbled to be recognised for the work that we do to support diversity and inclusion in technology and my hope is that this honour helps to inspire others to do the same,” Britton wrote on LinkedIn after the award was announced.

Other names in finance to be honoured included William Russell, Lord Mayor of the City of London and an advisory council member at Innovate Finance, was given a Knighthood for his services to financial innovation, culture and wellbeing in the City of London particularly during Covid-19.

Nigel Wilson, CEO of Legal and General, and Richard Meddings, executive chairman of TSB, were given a Knighthood and OBE respectively.

In recent years we’ve seen a host of fintech names receiving titles, including new Open Banking trustee Charlotte Crosswell who last year was awarded an OBE for her work in financial services.

Rishi Khosla, who heads up OakNorth Bank, the firm he co-founded, was awarded an OBE in 2019 “for services to business”.

Anne Boden, CEO and founder of Starling Bank, received an MBE in 2018 for services to financial technology.

Rhydian Lewis, co-founder and chief executive of the now-defunct RateSetter was also given an OBE in June 2017.

Peer-to-peer lending pioneers Giles Andrews, founder of Zopa, and Samir Desai, founder and CEO of Funding Circle were awarded an OBE and CBE respectively, back in 2015.
