Jobbio's Kirstie McDermott offers up some new roles as a possible solution to the continuing cost of living crisis.
Right now, no one is immune to cost of living conversations. Inflation is at a 40-year high, and with the news that the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) rose by nine per cent in the 12 months to April 2022 (up from 7 per cent in March), it won’t come as a surprise that, according to the Office for National Statistics, 88 per cent of adults in Great Britain said their cost of living had increased, as of May this year.
From groceries to fuel and energy bills, we’re feeling the pinch and while prices are rocketing, for most people, salaries are not: a report from XpertHR said that annual pay growth stalled at four per cent in May, which leaves people with a pay increase worth less than half of the nine per cent increase in prices.
There is some positive news – fuel prices could start to come down, says the RAC, and from next month, those who earn less than £41,389 will pay less in national insurance than they currently do. This takes in around 70 per cent of workers and means that the lower earnings limit will rise by £3,000.
Some companies are stepping up to help their employees too: Rolls-Royce is offering 14,000 UK workers a £2,000 one-off cash payment from August, as well as a four per cent increase for 11,000 shop floor workers, which it is backdating to March. EasyJet is planning to give new and existing cabin crew a £1,000 bonus, and the publisher Bloomsbury – of Harry Potter fame – will give all staff a six per cent bonus.
But what happens if your employer is showing no signs of offering salary increments or one-off bonuses to help you cope?
One solution is to look for a new role. Despite reports of hiring freezes in some sectors of the tech industry, the job market remains buoyant, and we have three roles below that are worth checking out. For thousands more open positions, visit the AltFi Job Board.
