5 Tools To Help You Create A Great CV
Jobbio's Kirstie McDermott offers tips for those who want to polish up their resumé.
Thinking about a job move? There’s a lot of it about at the moment. In the UK, around per cent of people employed moved from one job to another in the first quarter of 2022. It’s the highest job-to-job moving rate recorded in this time period, and almost a full percentage point up on a year earlier.
With so much competition in the job market, it's worth keeping in mind that on average, recruiters only look at resumes for six or seven seconds, so yours needs to really stand out. Here are five tools and websites to polish your resumé to perfection.
It’s lovely to think someone will carefully read your CV from cover to cover, but the reality is that before it is seen by an actual person, it will probably go through Applicant Tracking Software (ATS). Ninety-eight per cent of Fortune 500 companies use ATS to simplify the hiring process. To help, all the templates on Online have been optimised for ATS, and the website is easy to use with step-by-step guidance available.
Visual CV is a tool that allows you to be as creative or as clean as you like in your resumé. One of the key benefits is that you can upload your current CV as a PDF or Word document, and then tweak it as you see fit. VisualCV also allows you to publish your CV online and track the analytics to see how many times it has been viewed or downloaded.
Know your industry
Depending on the industry or role you’re applying for, you’ll need to create a different type of resume. Canva is useful for those in creative industries such as marketing, content creation, or advertising. The platform contains an impressive range of CV templates to choose from, or you can create your own from scratch. It is super user-friendly and lots of the templates are free to use. Downsides: you can’t auto-populate your CV and it can be a little tricky.
Wix is a good pick if you want to create a portfolio website, which will act as a visual CV, and the section containing online portfolios and CV sites can easily be tailored to any role or industry. An online resumé is a great way to stand out, and if you’re working in the tech sector or online media, it’s pretty much a necessity.
For developers and software engineers, having a good GitHub profile can be an essential shortcut to showcase your skills. It lets hiring managers see projects you’ve worked on and your journey in software development, in one handy location.
